Stocks Waffle After Morgan Stanley Earns

Stocks hovered around the unchanged mark Wednesday as investors digested better-than-expected results at Morgan Stanley and news that the government plans to free up billions of dollars at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, a move that could help struggling homeowners.

The quiet start to trading followed one of Wall Street's biggest rallies in years on stronger-than-expected investment bank results and several moves from the Federal Reserve in recent days, including a rate cut Tuesday, aimed at jump-starting the credit markets.
