NSW: 200 more security fences for NSW schools

SYDNEY, Feb 11 AAP - The NSW government will spend $20 million over four years to installsecurity fencing at another 200 state schools, Premier Bob Carr said today.

The new fences are in addition to 50 being built this financial year and 200 already installed.

"Security fences work, they protect our state schoolchildren and staff," Mr Carr said.

He said illegal entry into school grounds over the summer holidays was down by 34 per cent.

"They have also been shown to reduce vandalism and break-ins by 70 per cent and arsonby 90 per cent," he said.

Mr Carr said some schools did not want fences but released a list of 200 rural andmetropolitan schools where fences would be installed by 2007.

The initiative was part of the government's Safer Schools plan which includes specialisttraining for principals in handling serious violent incidents, a dedicated tollfree numberfor principals to speak directly to police and the installation of 39,000 computer lockingdevices to prevent theft of school computers.
