Protein-based inspiration

In 1948, long before computer modeling, Linus Pauling puzzled out the alpha-helix structure of polypeptides with pen and paper. For his work in molecular structure, Pauling won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954. Nine years later, the Nobel Committee awarded him another prize, this time for peace.

In honor of Pauling's work, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will host the Nobel Pauling Biotech Symposium, 11-13 October and 22-24 November. Speakers at the symposium - The Past, The Present and the Future of Drug Discovery and Therapeutics - will include Linda Pauling, Linus Pauling Jr., and representatives from MIT, Harvard University, Amgen, Genentech, and …
