Fed: AMWU criticises Goward report on paid maternity leave
The national leader of a powerful union has blasted the proposed 14-week paid maternityleave scheme that will be released by Sex Discrimination Commissioner PRU GOWARD today.
Australian Manufacturing Workers Union national secretary DOUG CAMERON describes theoffer of up to $431 a week as a B-Grade scheme.
He was responding to a leaked copy of Ms GOWARD's report in the Age newspaper.
The paper says working women will be offered the choice of taking 14 weeks taxpayer-fundedmaternity leave -- but at the expense of the baby bonus and family tax benefit.
Women will be eligible for the taxable benefit if they work 40 weeks in the year beforeclaiming maternity leave and those entitled to other paid schemes can double-dip.
Mr CAMERON's told Channel Nine only 45 per cent of working women will receive fullwage replacement and the scheme doesn't go far enough.
